A larger test satellite
Veery 0.6 scales the spacecraft systems flown on Veery 0.5 into a 3U CubeSat. Its larger antenna and power system support the next stage of radar testing, with coarser resolution and less observing time than the future full-scale Veery satellite.
Ocean-wind measurements
The pathfinder program is designed to measure ocean-surface wind speed and direction using C-band radar. Simulations of the baseline pathfinder indicate 50 km wind cells across a 750 km swath. These are modeled capabilities, not measurements demonstrated in orbit or specifications validated for each version.
Radar and pointing
The radar upgrade targets 30 W of forward power, up from 4 W on Veery 0.5. Calibration improvements compare the transmitted and received signals to improve measurement accuracy as temperatures change. The design spins the spacecraft to sweep its fixed antenna across the ocean, with a star tracker and new guidance software to determine and control where it points.
Communications and computing
Planned upgrades include direct satellite-to-ground communications, redundant higher-throughput radio links, a new processing architecture, and software updates from the ground. The flight software is being developed to operate the radar and pointing controls at the same time.
